From 14th to 16th May, EAAP held its first-ever workshop entirely dedicated to companion animals in Milan, attracting wide interest from scientists and stakeholders across Europe and beyond. A follow-up meeting with the EAAP Secretariat and Scientific Committee confirmed the success of the event and the strong commitment to continuing the initiative. The workshop will now be held biennially in Europe, with collaboration on thematic sessions during even years.
Future events will take place in attractive, easily accessible cities, ideally between March–June or October–December.
Key outcomes included the need to bridge companion and production animal science, foster multidisciplinary approaches, and broaden topics to include nutrition,
welfare, AI, sustainability, and lesser-studied companion species. Opportunities such as collaborating with the 2026 World Dog Show in Bologna were also identified. EAAP will propose the creation of a dedicated Working Group on Companion Animals to support coordination, visibility, and growth in this emerging field.
